description Mariana de Carvajal y Saavedra (1610?-1664) was a largely unknown writer from seventeenth-century Spain whose only production, Navidades de Madrid y noches entretenidas en ocho novelas, is framed within the canon of baroque short novel. The piece stands out for its modernity in the treatment of affective relationships. Its female characters resist the patriarchal imposition of a husband and defend their right to autonomy in deciding over their bodies and emotions. Emotions have effects on bodies and the aim of this work is to observe the connection between the social practice of emotions and their resulting bodily practices to achieve the desired marriage in the protagonist of "La dicha de Doristea."
