This current revival merits an enquire into the history of viticulture in the region, which can be approached from different perspectives. Our paper traces the history of the projects and institutions for the improvement of local wine production between the end of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth century, focusing on the Concordia Oenological Station [Estación Enológica de Concordia]. We argue that the institution was set up in a time when the main goal was promoting the production of wine with characteristics similar to what is currently known as terroir, an initiative that was initially backed by some technicians in the National Ministry of Agriculture [Ministerio Nacional de Agricultura]. Economic difficulties, the expansion of other types of crops in the province, changes in national wine production and in the educational policy of the National Ministry of Agriculture contributed to the reorientation of the institution.
