Da Silva Rodrigues, Charles Ysaac Cristãos-novos portugueses diáspora Nova Espanha Portuguese New Christians diaspora New Spain This article analyzes the trajectory and legacy of the Portuguese New Christians in New Spain through a review of the literature; it describes the historical context of the Jewish diaspora from Portugal and the main contributions of this community to the formation of colonial Mexico, emphasizing three figures of historical significance. The New Christians reproduced their successful economic dynamism, engaging in commerce, mining, and agriculture throughout the territory; they established networks of trust that enabled their adaptation to a diverse context, while maintaining their cultural and religious heritage, despite periods of persecution. This legacy constitutes an integral component of the formation of novel social and cultural identities within the Mexican people. However, this analysis also reveals the importance of revisiting the history of New Spain, conventionally underpinned by the Hispanic narrative, so it is essential to investigate the narrative of the New Portuguese Christians through alternative sources and deepen the knowledge about this community, which remains relatively understudied and disseminated. By giving voice to this cultural memory, this work seeks to fortify public reflection and encourage the participation of all, particularly descendants who currently claim Portuguese nationality.
