description Within the cultural history framework and the studies on Argentine and Spanish films, from the critical perspective of gender studies and with a comparative approach, this research offers a panoramic and contrapuntal review of maternal characters in a series of films produced in both countries during the classic industrial period, whereby the power wielded by women is decisive for the course of the dramatic action and the character structure. We are going to describe and analyze some of the ways in which maternal agency, the capacity to do and refrain from doing mentally, physically, and emotionally speaking, was imagined and represented, as well as its links to normative sex-gender models. We will examine the type of authority used, the characteristics of its interference in family life, and its performance. Hence, we will consider, on the one hand, how generic patterns (genre), the star system, and the modes of industrial production are articulated; and, on the other, the ways in which gender mandates are implemented considering the intersection of class and age.
