description Relations between the State and the Church in Peru had been fluctuating since before 1990, culminating in their legal separation in 1980 and tensions surrounding the issue of violence and pacification. Despite some periods of cordialities, conflicts escalated throughout the 1990s. This study explores these confrontations between the government of Alberto Fujimori, the Archbishop of Lima, Augusto Vargas Alzamora, and other Catholic ecclesiastical leaders. It analyses the characteristics of these conflicts, particularly those related to population, reproductive health, and abortion, highlighting the Catholic Church's capacity to influence public policies in authoritarian and globally adverse contexts. This study is relevant as it helps to understand both the transformations and continuities in institutional relationships, the significance of certain public policies, and the strategies employed in these confrontations.

This study is relevant as it helps to understand both the transformations and continuities in institutional relationships, the significance of certain public policies, and the strategies employed in these confrontations.
