description This Special Section brings together a selected number of contributions that analyze the strategic relationship between translation, government, and justice in the colonial Iberian worlds. The articles, contextualized within the viceregal spaces of New Spain and Peru, conceive translation practices as axial processes within imperial politics. The linguistic diversity pushed the Crown to naturalize and institutionalize mediation practices to achieve the administration and the evangelization of the Indigenous people. Translation also made it possible to ensure the necessary communication between royal officers and Indigenous leaders. These practices implied spaces of negotiation as well as dynamic power relations, given that the translators influenced the way in which government decisions would be implemented in the field. The essays carried together here allow to take the discussions on the relationship between translation, government and justice further.

La Sección Especial que presentamos agrupa una selección de contribuciones destinadas a ponderar analíticamente la relación estratégica entre traducción, gobierno y justicia en los mundos ibéricos coloniales. El conjunto de trabajos, contextualizados en los espacios virreinales de México y del Perú, examina las prácticas de traducción como procesos axiales en el funcionamiento del orden imperial. La diversidad lingüística impulsó a la Corona a naturalizar e institucionalizar prácticas de mediación para encauzar la administración política y las tareas pastorales de evangelización. Desde un punto de vista gubernamental, los procesos de traducción –entre diversas lenguas– permitieron articular la comunicación necesaria entre los oficiales regios y las dirigencias indígenas. Estas prácticas implicaron espacios diversos de negociación y equilibrios de poder, en virtud de que quien traducía influía en la forma en que se aplicaban las decisiones de gobierno. Con todo, los trabajos aquí reunidos asumen estos derroteros analíticos y, a partir de casos específicos, permiten seguir discutiendo la compleja relación entre traducción, gobierno y justicia. A Seção Especial que apresentamos reúne uma seleção de contribuições destinadas a ponderar analiticamente a relação estratégica entre tradução, governo e justiça nos mundos coloniais ibéricos. O conjunto de trabalhos, contextualizados nos espaços vice-reais do México e do Peru, examina as práticas de tradução como processos centrais no funcionamento da ordem imperial. A diversidade linguística levou a Coroa a naturalizar e institucionalizar práticas de mediação para canalizar a administração política e as tarefas pastorais de evangelização. Do ponto de vista governamental, os processos de tradução – entre diversas línguas – permitiram articular a comunicação necessária entre os oficiais reais e as lideranças indígenas. Essas práticas envolveram diversos espaços de negociação e equilíbrios de poder, uma vez que quem traduzia influenciava a forma como as decisões do governo eram aplicadas. No entanto, os trabalhos aqui reunidos assumem esses rumos analíticos e, a partir de casos específicos, permitem continuar discutindo a complexa relação entre tradução, governo e justiça.
