This article presents a brief description of the chronology of political persecution - especially in terms of detentions, torture, assassinations and disappearances - and its main characteristics. Subsequently, it gives an overview of the main topics contemplated by the historiography, the works dedicated to each one of them and some of the existing historiographical debates. It is raised that one of the most complex and urgent questions to be investigated, still little addressed by the bibliography, are the connections between long-term social repression and the political repression more circumscribed to the dictatorial period. Más allá de las semejanzas de la violencia ejercida por el Estado durante las dictaduras del Cono Sur, basadas en la teoría de guerra antisubversiva francesa y en la Doctrina de Seguridad Nacional, Brasil ha tenido sus rasgos particulares. En este artículo se describe abreviadamente la cronología de la persecución política – pensada sobretodo en términos de detenciones, torturas, asesinatos y desapariciones –y sus características principales, para enseguida presentar en líneas generales los temas contemplados por la historiografía, las obras dedicadas a cada uno de ellos y algunos de los debates historiográficos existentes. Se plantea aquí que una de las cuestiones más complejas y urgentes a investigarse, aún escasa en la bibliografía, son las interrelaciones entre una represión social de largo plazo y la represión política más circunscrita al período dictatorial.
