This has led historiography to enhance their elitist character without perceiving in their proper dimension their scope in terms of enrollment and their internal selective mechanisms. Also, its development hasn't been statistically compared to normal schools, both being the main modalities of post-primary education. This article focuses on describing the progress and limitations of these institutions, taking as its axis the enrollment, desertion, and graduation of students. Official statistics have been used as main sources, with which the picture of the situation of secondary education in the analyzed situations is reconstructed. Besides, the labor insertion of graduates is explored. Los colegios nacionales han sido en la Argentina las instituciones de formación de la élite dirigente, de los funcionarios estatales, a la vez que preparatorios para el ingreso a la Universidad. Esto ha conducido a que la historiografía realce el carácter elitista de los mismos sin percibir en su justa dimensión sus alcances en cuanto a matrícula y sus mecanismos selectivos internos. Tampoco se ha comparado, en términos estadísticos, su desarrollo con respecto a las escuelas normales, siendo ambas modalidades las principales de la educación posprimaria. Este artículo se aboca a describir los avances y limitaciones de estas instituciones, tomando como eje la matriculación, deserción y egreso de los estudiantes. Se han empleado como fuentes principales las estadísticas oficiales, con las cuales se reconstruye el cuadro de situación de la educación secundaria en las coyunturas analizadas. Además, se explora la inserción laboral de los graduados.
