| Sumario: | The continuous development of information and communication technologies and the spread of information and knowledge through digital media have fostered new kinds of texts which comprise words, sounds and images, all of them having different functions. Reading, thus, means more than just understanding the meanings of word-based texts. Reading means also gathering the various meanings of images. This paper explains the theoretical basis taken into account in developing a proposal for visual literacy.
