The heterogeneous impact of an 8.0 earthquake on housing quality : The case of Peruvian quake on 2007

We study the impact of the 2007 Pisco, Peru earthquake, the larger registered since 1970. We define treatment and control groups within concentric circles, and use a diff-in-diff estimator using highly detailed georeferenced microdata from both national household surveys (2005-2015) and three unusua...

We define treatment and control groups within concentric circles, and use a diff-in-diff estimator using highly detailed georeferenced microdata from both national household surveys (2005-2015) and three unusually close censuses, in 2005, 2007, and 2013. Our findings show that, in the very short run, the main impacts are the destruction of physical infrastructure of housing and subjective wellbeing. Remarkably, we find that the destructive power of the quake was particularly severe on bad-quality houses, and that the recovery pattern was anti-poor and unequal.
