Vivir, ‘to live’, as an auxiliary and as a (semi-)copulative verb in Hispanic America

description Despite the fact that there are several studies on Spanish verbal periphrases, some geographically restricted constructions have not received adequate treatment in the literature. In this paper we aim to present the characterization of the verb vivir (lit. 'to live') both as a semi-copulative and as an auxiliary verb which selects a gerund, features that seem to be systematically related in Spanish. Although it is ubiquitous in social media, this construction is rarely represented in the databases; which is why almost all examples have been taken from the social network Twitter. We will demonstrate/show that the verb vivir fulfills the criteria provided in the literature to be considered an auxiliary verb, and that the RAE's Dictionary already features an entry for this verb as a (semi-)copulative verb. When it comes to its meaning, we will follow Amaral's (2013) proposal that it is a pluriactional construction, and we will attempt to characterize its meaning in terms of the four parameters proposed in Cusic (1981).
