Sumario:This paper intends to explore the formal and semantic properties of a set of grammaticalized verbal forms in the imperative mood in Río de la Plata Spanish, following previous work (cf. Kornfeld 2016, 2020, 2022, in press). We prove that imperative mood verbal forms are particularly productive as the source of Rio de la Plata Spanish processes of grammaticalization, proposing that their outputs belong to two different syntactic categories. On one side, interjections (denominated “discourse markers” by literature) permit to express complete speech acts and have pragmatics meanings: warning (fijate/ vofi), hurry or encouragement (dale, meta/ metele, vamos), incredulity (andá, dale), admiration (mirá vos), etc. On the other side, modal, aspectual or polarity operators express grammatical meanings: emphatic negation (mirá si/ que), iterative aspect (dale, meta), surprise (jodeme, no me digas), proposal and world creation (dale), etc., and can be linked to different functional phrases in syntactic cartography (cf. specially Cinque 1999). Besides the descriptive contribution to the grammar of Río de la Plata Spanish, we intend to investigate, thus, a possibility of output of the grammaticalization of verbal forms in the imperative mood which had not been almost explored by previous literature of different frameworks.
