Concomitantly with the emergence of the environmental issue, its use expanded to become a descriptor that allows questioning productive practices throughout the region. However, I find it necessary to critically reflect on it and think about its relevance to characterize these transformations. Based on a documentary analysis, I initially set out to historicize the category 'pampeanization' to inscribe it in its unique contexts of production, circulation, and consumption. Subsequently, based on an ethnographic analysis, I set out to evaluate its empirical relevance in the Lower Delta. I highlight the need to differentiate between processes of 'terrestrialization' and 'pampeanization', and I warn about its relevance to produce socially committed situated knowledge that contributes to the debate on the construction of historical projects specific to the island(s) and the islanders. Hace poco más de veinte años, Galafassi propuso la categoría ‘pampeanización’ para describir las transformaciones productivas, sociales y ambientales de las islas del Bajo Delta del Paraná. Concomitantemente con la emergencia de la cuestión ambiental en la agenda pública, su uso se expandió hasta convertirse en un descriptor que permite cuestionar las prácticas productivas en toda la región. Sin embargo, encuentro necesario reflexionar críticamente y repensar su pertinencia para caracterizar dichas transformaciones. A partir de un análisis documental, inicialmente me propuse historizar la categoría ‘pampeanización’ para inscribirla en sus singulares contextos de producción, circulación y consumo. Posteriormente, a partir de un análisis etnográfico, me propuse evaluar su pertinencia empírica en el Bajo Delta. Sostengo la necesidad de diferenciar entre ‘terrestrialización’ y ‘pampeanización’, y alerto sobre su relevancia para producir conocimiento situado socialmente comprometido que aporte al debate sobre la construcción de proyectos históricos propios de la(s) isla(s) y los isleños.
