The aim of the work is to demonstrate how musical analysis serves as a fundamental tool in understanding genres and styles. For this reason, I propose reviewing the recent articles by Hugo Fellone (2021–2022), which update debates on musical genre in relation to its historical dimension and contemporary circulation patterns. Additionally, I draw upon Leonard Meyer's (2000) conceptualization of musical style, specifically his scalar logic, to comprehend the various levels of constraints. This approach allows me to link both concepts: musical genre and style in popular music. In this sense, musical genre consists of a set of musical events with greater stability in certain characteristics throughout its history, while styles can be understood as the different temporal and spatial changes within genres, as well as the intersection of different genres. Finally, I present the possibility of describing musical features in genres/styles using statistical tools. To support this idea, I draw from Trevor de Clercq and David Temperley's works on rock, as well as Carlos Almada's study of Tom Jobim's style. En la edición de 2023 de Músicos en Congreso, tuve el gusto de presentar la conferencia que se detalla en este artículo. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es resaltar el análisis musical como una herramienta fundamental para comprender los géneros y estilos musicales. Por esta razón, propongo revisar los artículos más recientes de Hugo Fellone (2021–2022), los cuales contribuyen a actualizar los debates sobre el género musical en relación con su dimensión histórica y las formas de circulación contemporáneas. Además, me baso en la conceptualización del estilo musical de Leonard Meyer (2000), quien propuso una lógica escalar para entender los diferentes niveles de las constricciones musicales. Esta estrategia me permite vincular ambos conceptos: género y estilo en la música popular. En este sentido, el género musical se define como un conjunto de eventos musicales con una mayor estabilidad en alguno de sus rasgos a través de su historia, mientras que los estilos pueden entenderse como los cambios temporales y espaciales dentro de los géneros, así como las intersecciones entre diferentes géneros. Finalmente, propongo la posibilidad de describir los rasgos musicales en géneros y estilos mediante herramientas estadísticas. Para respaldar esta idea, me apoyo en los trabajos sobre rock de Trevor de Clercq y David Temperley, así como en el estudio del estilo de Tom Jobim realizado por Carlos Almada.
