This article offers a contribution to the growing literature, focusing, unlike most other studies, on a Third World country. It also reflects the growing influence of social history in Latin American research on the formation of the working class. Actualmente hay un renovado interés en la relación entre las fluctuaciones económicas y los movimientos de huelga, que remite a un artículo de Eric Hobsbawm (1984) y a un texto polémico aún más antiguo de León Trotsky (1984). Este artículo ofrece una contribución a la creciente literatura, centrándose, a diferencia de la mayoría de los otros estudios, en un país del Tercer Mundo. También refleja la creciente influencia de la historia social en la investigación latinoamericana sobre la formación de la clase trabajadora.
