The short passage illustrates the socio–political implications of the Crotonian mise en scène, which initially succeeds at the expense of the credulous heredipetae: through the inversion of the concepts of beneficium and gratia and the distorted use of amicitia, Eumolpus, a pretended rich man without direct heirs, manages to become one of the most prominent figures in Croton and boasts of being able to guarantee impunity for the crimes of his clientes thanks to the influence of powerful friends.
