Embodied in various media (sculpted, carved, handwritten, or printed), it will transport a message through time, granting it permanence and materiality, enabling the connection between the writer/producer and the reader, who must transform and interpret the word, while translating information into knowledge, belief, art, ethics or entertainment. In the present investigation, the existence of the book-document will be addressed as an object conceived, written, edited, bound, marketed, or stored to be read and used, bearing marks of provenance that show the nature of the relationships of the object with remote(s) possessor(s) and eventual user(s). The study of the marks found in documents contained in the archives located in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores: inscriptions, exlibris, stamps, labels, annotations in the margins, dedications, and various interventions, are relevant in the identification of the documentary specimens, making the knowledge of the history of the collections possible. At the same time, the analysis of these marks leads to the study of the reading personalities who populated the Atlantic islands. ARK CAICYT: https://id.caicyt.gov.ar/ark:/s18511740/fgasmkjc6 La escritura es un lenguaje gráfico que, como forma de actividad humana, posee la facultad de significar el pensamiento y de expresar los fenómenos del espíritu, además de crear actos que, como verdaderos, emergen a modo de genuinas reflexiones. Sustentada por diversos soportes (esculpida, tallada, manuscrita o impresa), la escritura transporta un mensaje a través del tiempo, concediéndole permanencia y materialidad, posibilitando la conexión entre el escritor/productor y el lector. Será el lector quien deba transformar e interpretar la palabra, y al tiempo traducir la información en conocimiento, en creencia, en arte, en ética o en entretenimiento. En la presente investigación se aborda la existencia del documento-libro como objeto pensado, escrito, editado, encuadernado, comercializado o resguardado para ser leído y usado, portador de marcas de procedencia que evidencian la naturaleza de las relaciones del objeto con remoto(s) poseedore(s) y eventual(es) usuario(s). El estudio de las marcas encontradas en algunos ejemplares documentales albergados en el archipiélago portugués de las Azores, tales como inscripciones, exlibris, sellos, etiquetas, anotaciones, dedicatorias e intervenciones varias, no solo favorece la construcción de la historia de las colecciones. De su análisis resulta la identificación de personalidades lectoras que poblaron las islas atlánticas.
