In this descriptive and transversal work, bicycle trips were counted in situ in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico, during two days and in 15 intersections of the state, in the same way a survey was carried out to know the attitudes, motivations, barriers and travel patterns of people who use the bicycle. The results of the scrutiny of bicycle trips reveal the wide gender gap, since only 4.6% of the trips were made by women; for the transversal study, 379 cyclists were surveyed and significant differences were found in relation to gender in terms of attitudes, perception of barriers and reasons for using the bicycle. Although road violence is the main concern, for women the perception of insecurity and street harassment represent important barriers to cycling. The study also incorporates territorial patterns through an origin-destination survey.

La evidencia indica que, para aumentar el número de viajes en bicicleta, es necesario contar con infraestructura ciclista interconectada y de calidad; sin embargo, esto no garantiza que se incremente la diversidad de usuarios. En este estudio descriptivo y transversal se contabilizaron los viajes ciclistas in situ en Culiacán, Sinaloa, México, durante dos días y en 15 intersecciones de la ciudad. Asimismo, se realizó una encuesta para conocer las actitudes, motivaciones, barreras y patrones de viaje de las personas usuarias de la bicicleta. Los resultados del escrutinio de viajes muestran una amplia brecha de género, pues solo el 4,6 % de los traslados fueron realizados por mujeres. En el estudio transversal, se encuestó a 379 ciclistas y se encontraron diferencias significativas según el género. Aunque la violencia vial se identificó como la principal barrera para ambos grupos, las mujeres enfrentan desafíos adicionales, como las actividades de cuidado, la inseguridad pública y el acoso callejero, factores que limitan su disposición a optar por la bicicleta como medio de transporte.
