For this reason, on January 9, 2000, Jamil Mahuad, President of the Republic, decided to formally dollarize the Ecuadorian economy. Within the functioning of the economy of any country, the financial system is considered a key element; therefore, this paper focuses on the analysis of the effects of formal dollarization on the management of banking institutions and the performance of the Ecuadorian economy. This research has the primary objective of analyzing the behavior of the financial system in Ecuador since 1995 and the influence of dollarization on the evolution of financial institutions between 1995 and 2017. Durante la década de los noventa, Ecuador se encontraba sumido en la mayor crisis financiera de su historia. La misma produjo la caída de múltiples instituciones bancarias, causando episodios extremos de inestabilidad monetaria con altos índices de inflación, desempleo, fuga de capitales y el colapso de su sistema financiero. Por esta razón el 9 de enero del 2000 Jamil Mahuad, Presidente de la República, decidió dolarizar formalmente la economía ecuatoriana. Dentro del funcionamiento de la economía de cualquier país, el sistema financiero es considerado una pieza clave; por lo tanto, este trabajo se focaliza en el análisis de los efectos de la dolarización formal sobre la gestión de las entidades bancarias y el desempeño de la economía ecuatoriana.
