While the European Union bases its growth on a sustainable, inclusive, and circular development, MERCOSUR only included environmental protection in its sectoral policies in a rhetorically way. Yet, the commitments assumed in the Chapter could trigger MERCOSUR’s environmental agenda. To achieve it, the challenges are institutional dynamization to implement an agreement of magnitude; the need to diversify the export basket, promote production patterns consistent with increasing environmental and climatic requirements, and the coordination of actions within the framework of the Multilateral Agreements on the Environment (MEA), the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and international cooperation. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo reflexionar acerca del Acuerdo de Asociación Estratégica MERCOSUR-Unión Europea, alcanzado en 2019, y las oportunidades y desafíos que se presentan para la implementación del Capítulo sobre Comercio y Desarrollo Sostenible. Se reconocen asimetrías en la atención de las consideraciones ambientales, por parte de ambos bloques: la Unión Europea basa su crecimiento en el desarrollo sostenible, inclusivo y circular; el MERCOSUR solo ha incluido de manera retórica la protección del medio ambiente en sus políticas sectoriales. Aun así, los compromisos asumidos en el Capítulo mencionado podrían constituirse en un disparador de la agenda ambiental para este último.
