The purpose of this paper is to review this argu-ment, understand their rationale and propose an alternative, already suggested by R.J. Cuervo. El general rechazo del artículo delante del nombre propio deriva de sus propiedades referenciales y gramaticales. Sin embargo, en algunas variedades dialectales y sociolectales del español es frecuente la presencia de un artículo expletivo tanto con antropónimos como con topónimos. En el caso del nombre de Argentina, el uso del artículo ha sido explicado -y prescripto- por la Academia Argentina de Letras a partir de un argumento gramatical, la elipsis. El objeto de este trabajo es revisar esta argumentación, entender sus fundamentos y proponer una alternativa, ya sugerida por R.J.
