During the Second World War once again defending the homeland took him away from his job as a historian. In the Great War, Marc Bloch was among the first people who enlisted to stop the German advance. La verdadera talla de Marc Bloch como historiador no debe medirse por lo que escribió e investigó sino por lo que inspiró a escribir y a investigar. Su producción historiográfica más importante se sitúa en el período de la entreguerra. Luego de servir en la guerra del 14 alcanzando el grado de capitán con cuatro menciones de honor abrazó la pluma con el mismo ardor con el que había empuñado las armas. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial una vez más la defensa de la patria lo arrancaba de su oficio de historiador.
