The interest in the figure of Gietz is in that he was the only Latin American who was in charge of the presidency of FID, was the director of  CAICYT, and of Latin American Service on Translation Information of UNESCO in Argentina, among other charges in national and international organizations. He was one of the most important documentalists in the country, however, he is unknown to the new generations of information workers. Along with his father, who was also a librarian, they played a key role in the implementation of documental and library policies and, in some cases, continue to bear fruit inside and outside CONICET. El presente artículo aborda el trabajo profesional del bibliotecario Ricardo Gietz, entre los años del Estado Benefactor desarrollado por el peronismo hasta el desmantelamiento del mismo por el neoliberalismo en la década de 1990. El interés en la figura de Gietz, se debe a que fue el único latinoamericano que tuvo a su cargo la presidencia de la FID, fue director del CAICYT y del Servicio Iberoamericano de Información sobre la Traducción de la UNESCO en la Argentina, entre otros cargos que ocupó en organismos nacionales e internacionales. Ha sido uno de los documentalistas más importantes que tuvo el país, no obstante, es desconocido para las nuevas generaciones de trabajadores de la información.
