Sumario: | With the introduction of railways in Argentina, engineers became a technical bureaucracy in charge of the study, the construction and the operation of railways. Also, they were in charge of its management. The for-mation of this specialized technocracy was in line with the consolidation of the National State. The first engi-neers were hired abroad and years later they were educated in the nationaluniversities. As soon as they gradu-ated, they were allocated in the various state agencies and staterailways, where two types of careers could be identified: some engineers heldtechnical poststhroughout the network and other occupied centralized tech-nical and management positions. The sources used for this study were the Proceedings of the Ministries of Interior and Public Works, Proceedings of the Railways, specialized journals and archives of the General Directorate of Railways and the General Administration of the State Railways. |
