For this purpose, a search, selection, analysis and discussion of literature (books, book chapters, articles in specialized journals and undergraduate and postgraduate theses) produced in the country in two fields of study, that of educational research and that of youth and —when necessary— we resorted to those of international origin that have served as epistemological, theoretical and empirical reference for those produced locally. It focuses on the studies that have analyzed young students, their subjectivities, experiences and student identities to identify those elements that allow to understand “how they are”, central aspects for the understanding of their youthful identities. Finally, it is recognized the most relevant advances in understanding young students and their identities; and some themes and problems that, being scarce or not at all addressed, should be recovered and deepened. Este artículo tiene como objetivo presentar un estado de la cuestión sobre la construcción de las identidades juveniles en estudiantes del nivel medio superior en México, con el fin de conocer cuáles han sido las maneras de abordarla y a qué resultados se ha llegado. Para ello se realizó una búsqueda, selección, análisis y discusión de la literatura (libros, capítulos de libro, artículos en revistas especializadas y tesis de grado y posgrado) producidos en dos campos de estudios, el de la investigación educativa y el de la juventud en el país y —cuando fue necesario— se recurrió a aquellos de origen internacional que han servido como referencia epistemológica, teórica y empírica para los producidos localmente. Se reflexiona en particular sobre los estudios que han analizado a los jóvenes estudiantes, sus subjetividades, experiencias e identidades estudiantiles para identificar aquellos elementos que permiten entender “cómo son” los sujetos revelan aspectos centrales para la comprensión de sus identidades juveniles.
