As in other professional activities or academic disciplines, a number of elements indicate the degree of maturity that these institutions are developing or obtaining and to what extent they approach their consolidation. In the specific case we are studying, we identify the following actions: materialization of areas of partnership, participation in management levels in the organizations that represent the publishing industry, presence in local and international fairs, promotion of training instances of its members and production of books of very good quality. There are also other aspects that justify and drive us to this particular study within the heterogeneous field of publishing, as well as the amount of those cultural undertakings and their productions, and the identity they acquired inside and outside the field of university life. Some of the objectives of this article are: to describe this path, providing it with its own history, identify the key role of the State in this process, propose some specific definitions, and contextualize this path in the whole field of publishing. Este artículo analiza algunos elementos relacionados con el proceso de profesionalización que se ha venido dando en las editoriales de las universidades nacionales argentinas en la última década. Como en otras actividades profesionales o disciplinas académicas, una serie de elementos resultan indicadores del grado de madurez que estas instituciones van desarrollando u obteniendo, así como la medida en que se acercan a su consolidación. En el caso que nos ocupa, identificamos los siguientes elementos: concretar espacios de asociacionismo, integrar espacios cada vez más visibles en las organizaciones que representan al sector editorial, participar en ferias locales e internacionales, promover instancias de capacitación y formación de sus integrantes y producir libros de muy buena calidad. Además de otros aspectos que justifican y nos impulsan a su estudio en particular dentro del heterogéneo campo de la producción editorial, como son la cantidad de esos emprendimientos culturales y de sus producciones, y la identidad adquirida dentro y fuera del campo de la vida universitaria.
