description In this paper we present the study of different early Holocene zooarchaeological assemblages coming from three sites located at La María archaeological locality (Central Plateau of Santa Cruz province, Argentina): Casa del Minero 1, La Mesada, and Cueva de La Ventana. Faunal remains were analyzed following usual criteria in zooarchaeological studies, such as the anatomical and taxonomical identification of elements. Taphonomic traits that evidence the incidence of different agents, both anthropic and non-anthropic, were also evaluated. This allowed characterizing and comparing the main characteristics of each set, to discuss the strategies for the exploitation of animal resources. Likewise, the approach allowed evaluating the way in which the space was used. The results indicate that guanacos (Lama guanicoe) were utilized as the main resource, although not intensively. Regarding the use of space, the low intensity of exploitation could be indicating that animal processing activities were not carried out inside the caves or that the sites were ephemerally occupied, or even that they were abandoned in the first thousand years of the Early Holocene. This possible abandonment would correspond to a particular or local phenomenon, rather than a regional one, since at this time other places in the Central Plateau and the nearby forest-steppe ecotone sector show evidences of the first human occupations.
