But in this article we will show that at this time the State even guaranteed the freedom of the Church. In order to explain this, we have chosen the study of the ecclesiastical justice and the relations between ecclesiastical and civil tribunals. Civil tribunals, far for attempting to ecclesiastical ones, most of the time respected their decisions. We will find the explanation of this dilemma on the peculiarities of the relations between Church and State in Argentina. En el estudio de las relaciones entre la Iglesia y el Estado en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX en la Argentina se ha subrayado infinidad de veces la hostilidad del Estado liberal tenía hacia la Iglesia. No obstante, en este trabajo mostraremos muy por el contrario que en este período el Estado pudo servir de garante de la libertad de la Iglesia. Hemos elegido como vía para abordar este problema el estudio de la justicia en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y el modo en que se organizó la relación entre los tribunales eclesiásticos y los tribunales civiles. Estos últimos, lejos de atentar contra los primeros, respetaron más de una vez sus decisiones. Para explicar por qué el Estado podía llegar a respetar la libertad de la Iglesia en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX es necesario considerar cuáles eran las peculiaridades de las relaciones entre la Iglesia y el Estado argentinos.
