It points out transformations over the ethnic cartography, the sociocultural changes and the effects on the interethnic relations caused by the late conquest and colonization of the region. Socio-historic processes such as the bandeirantes slave raids, the Chiquito-Guaycurú war, the territorial dispute between Spain and Portugal, and changes in the colonial administration of the province of Chiquitos after the expulsion of the Jesuits are taken into account. We especially consider the impact of those historic processes on the native groups that inhabited the river coasts and neighbouring lands, as well as the relations involving Indians, white and black people coming from the Kingdonm of Portugal. Este artículo describe la situación de la frontera entre los imperios español y portugués en el alto río Paraguay en las épocas jesuítica y colonial tardía (siglo XVIII). Señala las transformaciones en la cartografía étnica que tuvieron lugar a partir de la tardía conquista y colonización de la región. Se tienen en cuenta procesos sociohistóricos como las incursiones esclavistas de los bandeirantes portugueses, la guerra chiquito-guaycurú, la disputa territorial entre ambas coronas ibéricas, y los cambios en la administración de la provincia de Chiquitos después de la expulsión de los jesuitas. Se analizan los cambios socioculturales y en las relaciones interétnicas, provocados por esos procesos históricos, prestando especial atención en la incidencia que tuvieron entre los grupos indígenas que poblaban las zonas aledañas al río, así como también en la vinculación de éstos con otros actores sociales blancos y negros, provenientes del reino de Portugal. O artigo descrebe a situação na fronteira dos Impérios português e espanhol no Alto rio Paraguai no período jesuíta e tardo-colonial, século XVIII. Assinala as transformações na cartografia étnica ocorridas a partir da conquista e colonização tendo em conta processos como as incursões escravistas dos bandeirantes, a guerra chiquito-guaycurú, a disputa territorial entre ambas coroas e as mudanças na administração da província de Chiquitos após a expulsão dos jesuítas. Analissam-se as variações socioculturais e nas relações interétnicas geradas por esses processos históricos, com uma ênfase especial en sua incidência sobre os indígenas que habitavam a região e no contato com outros atores sociais brancos e negros provenientes do reino de Portugal.
