Based on fieldwork with the Aweti, a Tupi xinguano group, the analysis of this logic enables a description of the xinguano sociocultural unity and of the groups that constitute it not only as historical products —something that has already been shown by the region’s ethnology— but also as continuously historical products, always to be recreated. The article’s key argument is that sorcery is the dark side, the unwanted effect of the process of becoming kin, a process central to the constitution of xinguano identity. Thus, sorcery would be what makes the xinguano people never seem perfectly xinguanos/humans to themselves. El artículo propone un análisis de la dinámica sociopolítica del conjunto multiétnico xinguano, situado en la región centro-oeste de Brasil, a partir de la lógica revelada por las practicas de hechicería en aquel universo. Basado en el trabajo de campo realizado con los Aweti, un grupo tupí xinguano, se busca demostrar que el análisis de la hechicería permite una descripción de la unidad sociocultural xinguana y de los grupos que la contituyen no sólo como un producto histórico —lo que ha ya ha sido abordado en la etnología del área— sino también com productos continuamente históricos, siempre en vías de recreación. El argumento central de este trabajo es que la hechicería es el lado oscuro, el efecto no deseado, del proceso de hacerse pariente, base de la constituición de una identidad xinguana. La hechicería sería, de esa manera, aquello que hace que los xinguanos nunca aparezcan para sí mismos como perfectamente xinguanos/humanos. O artigo propõe uma análise da dinâmica sociopolítica do conjunto multiétnico xinguano, situado na região centro-oeste do Brasil, a partir da lógica revelada pelas práticas de feitiçaria naquele universo. Com base no trabalho de campo realizado com os Aweti, grupo tupi xinguano, procura-se demonstrar que a análise de tal lógica permite a descrição da unidade sociocultural xinguana e dos grupos que a constituem não apenas como productos históricos — o que já foi abordado na etnologia da área — mas também como produtos continuamente históricos, sempre em vias de recriação. O argumento central deste trabalho é que a feitiçaria é o lado obscuro, o efeito indesejado, do proceso de tornar-se parente em que se funda a constituição de uma identidade xinguana. A feitiçaria seria, deste modo, aquilo que faz com que os xinguanos nunca apareçam para si mesmos como perfeitamente xinguanos/humanos.
