I37-R143-10908-262912026-04-09T03:01:08Z Income pooling hypothesis: insights from Latin American household expenditure surveys Senra, Rocío Julieta Edo, María Echeverría, Lucía Fil: Senra, Rocío Julieta. Universidad de San Andrés. Departamento de Economía; Argentina. This study tests the income pooling hypothesis in four Latin American countries—Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay—by analyzing household expenditure data across twelve categories. Traditional economic models, such as the unitary model, assume that household income is pooled and allocated to maximize welfare. However, empirical evidence suggests that this assumption may not fully capture the complexities of intra-household decision-making. Using harmonized household expenditure surveys and quadratic Engel curve estimations, this research tests whether household expenditures vary based on the source of income, with a particular focus on gender-based differences in spending preferences. The findings indicate that, in all four countries, the income pooling hypothesis is rejected in several categories, including food and non-alcoholic beverages, clothing and footwear, and hotels and restaurants, suggesting that the identity of the income earner influences household spending decisions. These results contribute to the literature on household economics by highlighting the importance of considering individual preferences, bargaining power, and socio-economic contexts when designing policies. The study has significant policy implications, particularly for social welfare programs, as it suggests that household-level interventions may need to account for intra-household dynamics, such as the control over income and gender-based preferences, to be more effective and equitable. 2026-04-08T18:13:23Z 2026-04-08T18:13:23Z 2025-08 Tesis info:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesis info:ar-repo/semantics/tesis de maestría info:eu-repo/semantics/updatedVersion https://repositorio.udesa.edu.ar/handle/10908/26291 eng info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/ application/pdf application/pdf Universidad de San Andrés.
