Drawing on postcolonial and decolonial frameworks, the analysis centers on the mestizo characters Camila and her son Mauricio, who embody racial and gender subalternity. The novel is interpreted as a subversion of dominant racial paradigms by granting voice, agency, and symbolic centrality to historically marginalized subjects. Through the sentimental plot structure, Manso constructs a denunciation of the patriarchal, racist, and slave-owning order, and redefines mestizaje not as degeneration but as testimony of ongoing structural violence. Este artículo propone una lectura de La familia del Comendador (1854) de Juana Paula Manso desde la perspectiva del mestizaje como figura crítica dentro del imaginario racial decimonónico. A partir de los aportes de los estudios poscoloniales y decoloniales, se analizan los personajes de Camila y su hijo Mauricio, figuras mestizas que encarnan la subalternidad racial y de género. Se sostiene que la novela subvierte los estereotipos dominantes al otorgar voz, agencia y centralidad simbólica a estos sujetos históricamente excluidos del relato nacional. A través de una estructura sentimental, Manso inscribe una denuncia al orden social esclavista, racista y patriarcal, y propone una narrativa en la que el mestizaje deja de ser un signo de degeneración para convertirse en testimonio de una violencia estructural aún persistente.
