| Sumario: | This article examines La familia del Comendador (1854) by Juana Paula Manso, focusing on the notion of mestizaje as a critical figure within the racial imaginary of nineteenth-century Argentina. Drawing on postcolonial and decolonial frameworks, the analysis centers on the mestizo characters Camila and her son Mauricio, who embody racial and gender subalternity. The novel is interpreted as a subversion of dominant racial paradigms by granting voice, agency, and symbolic centrality to historically marginalized subjects. Through the sentimental plot structure, Manso constructs a denunciation of the patriarchal, racist, and slave-owning order, and redefines mestizaje not as degeneration but as testimony of ongoing structural violence. |
