Asteraceae is also one of the most diverse and widely distributed families of the Paraguayan flora, although it has still not been treated in its entirety and thus several information gaps remain. Based on recent phylogenetic studies, Asteraceae is currently classified into 16 subfamilies and 50 tribes. The objective of this study was to systematize the subfamilies, tribes and genera of Asteraceae present in Paraguay and determine the groups of poorly studied genera and species. The methodology consisted of a review of available literature, herbarium specimens and online databases. Eight subfamilies, 21 tribes, 157 genera, and 543 currently accepted species have been recorded for the flora of Paraguay; subfamily Asteroideae is best represented, with 13 tribes and 117 genera, among which the tribes Eupatorieae (35 genera) and Heliantheae (28 genera) stand out. An artificial key to the identification of tribes occurring in Paraguay is presented, based mainly on diagnostic floral characters, and others that are notable for their particularity, such as the habit of the plant, the presence of thorns, among others.
