El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar empíricamente la importancia de las estrategias sindicales como variable moderadora entre el poder estructural y asociativo de los sindicatos y su poder de negociación y movilización. Para ello, seleccionamos tres sindicatos, uno de cada uno de tres sectores industriales estratégicos de la economía nacional argentina (automotriz, químico y oleaginoso), y analizamos sus dinámicas de negociación colectiva y conflictividad laboral durante el período 2003-2015. La investigación se basa en una revisión de fuentes secundarias (convenios colectivos y bases de datos de conflictos), así como de fuentes primarias (entrevistas semiestructuradas a directivos, dirigentes sindicales, representantes de los trabajadores y activistas). Si bien los trabajadores de cada uno de estos sectores tienen un grado similar de poder estructural, observamos diferencias entre ellos en las condiciones laborales, salariales y organizativas. Estas diferencias se asocian con tres estrategias sindicales distintas para construir poder sindical: asociativas, de confrontación y combativas. The aim of this paper is to analyse empirically the importance of union strategies as a moderating variable between unions’ structural and associational power and their bargaining and mobilisation power. To this end, we selected three unions, one from each of three strategic industrial sectors in the Argentinian national economy – automotive, chemical and edible oils – and analysed their dynamics of collective bargaining and labour conflict in the 2003–2015 period. The research is based on a review of secondary sources (collective bargaining agreements and conflict databases) as well as primary sources (semi-structured interviews with managers, trade union leaders, worker representatives and activists). Whereas workers in each of these sectors have a similarly high degree of structural power, we observed differences among the sectors in working, wage and organisational conditions. These differences are associated with three different union strategies for building union power, which we identify as partnership, confrontational and combative. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar empiricamente a importância das estratégias sindicais como variável moderadora entre o poder estrutural e associativo dos sindicatos e seu poder de barganha e mobilização. Para tanto, selecionamos três sindicatos, um de cada um dos três setores industriais estratégicos da economia nacional argentina – automotivo, químico e óleos comestíveis – e analisamos suas dinâmicas de negociação coletiva e conflito trabalhista no período de 2003 a 2015. A pesquisa se baseia na revisão de fontes secundárias (acordos coletivos de trabalho e bancos de dados de conflitos), bem como de fontes primárias (entrevistas semiestruturadas com gestores, líderes sindicais, representantes dos trabalhadores e ativistas). Embora os trabalhadores de cada um desses setores tenham um grau similarmente alto de poder estrutural, observamos diferenças entre os setores em termos de condições de trabalho, salariais e organizacionais.
