Pedogenetic factors and processes of alfisols in Argentina

The relationships existing between some specific properties of Alfisols Order soils and soil forming factors and geographic distribution were studied. Selected properties were: pH, organic carbon, CEC, clay contents, clay relations of eluvial and iluvial horizons, texture and thickness of horizons a...

Selected properties were: pH, organic carbon, CEC, clay contents, clay relations of eluvial and iluvial horizons, texture and thickness of horizons and pedogenetic development of soil profiles. Argentine Alfisols show great geographic variability and heterogeneity, with Aqualfs predominating above other Suborders. Alfisols rank fourth in areal extent in Argentina, covering more than 225.000 km2. Sixty one percent of Alfisols lie within the Chaco plain morphostructural region, with 21% in the Pampean plain (21%) and 12% in the Subandean ranges. The parent materials are variable, although silty and sandy loam, fluvial and reworked acolian deposits dominate. They formed mainly on flat or gently sloping surfaces (alluvial plains, terraces, shallow depressions and lakes). Prairie vegetation prevails over forest. Moisture regimes are aquic. udic and ustic, with a few areas that are xeric. Temperature regimes are mainly thermic and hyperthermic. The most common succession of horizons is A-E-Bt-BC-C, and diagnostic horizons are natric, argillic, kandic. albic and ocric.
