Cerros Amarillos: An alteration porphyry type system, Upper Miocene, Cordillera Principal, Mendoza

In the Cerros Amarillos area, Cordillera Principal of Mendoza province, Argentina (35°S, 70°W) it crops out an alteration zone which is spatially linked to volcanics of Upper Miocene age. It is characterized by early potassic alteration with a paragenesis of biotite-magnetite. It is overprinted by a...

It is characterized by early potassic alteration with a paragenesis of biotite-magnetite. It is overprinted by a sericita-silica-carbonate paragenensis with associated albite. This later stage corresponds to a high level albite-sericite association which is prior to the phyllic alteration stage. Endoskarn facies comprising pyroxene breccias and plagio-clase-pyroxene veins also crops out in the area. The recognized paragenesis points to a porphyry system with sodic alteration. The stratigraphic controls and the geochronological data suggest a genetically link with the Upper Miocene magmatism. Fil:Rubinstein, N. Universidad de Buenos Aires.
