Sumario:After many years of observations and long field trips in Neuquén and Mendoza provinces, Groeber set the bases of the first phase of uplift of the Andean Cordillera, which he called by the name of Intersenonian Movement. Far from losing their validity, these movements were ratified and complimented by different authors that visited the area applying diverse methodologies. However, Groeber underestimated the intensity of these movements in northern Neuquén and southern Mendoza since he didn’t take into account synorogenic deposition, a concept defined many decades later. Through the identification of growth strata and synsedimentary deformation in the Neuquén Group, first Andean foreland basin, the area affected by this deformational phase was delimited more accurately, and its onset has been constrained in the Cenomanian (ca. 100 Ma). Moreover, a solution for Groeber’s nomenclature problem is proposed, where the “capas del Ranquil” in Mendoza had to be assigned within the Diamantiano, equivalent to the Rayoso Formation in Neuquén. Due to the lack of characteristic fossils to perform a comparison, the maximum age of sedimentation and the U-Pb age pattern from detrital zircons present a useful tool to establish the correlation of the Ranquilense in Mendoza with the Neuquén Group in Neuquén, and by doing this, avoid using the denomination of Diamante Formation for these deposits, at least in southern Mendoza. © 2017, Asociacion Geologica Argentina.
